The talk, and much of the writing itself, was born without any doubt from the very sake of himself. Io dunque non voglio a questa mia Vita far precedere né deboli scuse, né false o illusorie ragioni, le quali non mi verrebbero a ogni modo punto credute da altri; e della mia futura veracità in questo mio scritto assai mal saggio darebbero. I therefore do not want my life to be preceded or weak excuses or false or deceptive reasons, which I would point to any event believed by others, and my future truthfulness in my very poorly written essay would. Io perciò ingenuamente confesso, che allo stendere la mia propria vita inducevami, misto forse ad alcune altre ragioni, ma vie più gagliarda d’ogni altra, l’amore di me medesimo; quel dono cioè, che la natura in maggiore o minor dose concede agli uomini tutti; ed in soverchia dose agli scrittori, principalissimamente poi ai poeti, od a quelli che tali si tengono. I confess therefore naively, that stretch to my own life inducevami, mixed perhaps some other reasons, but the most gagliarda of each other, the love of myself, that gift that is, that nature to a greater or lesser dose grants all men; soverchia dose and writers, principalissimamente then to the poets, or those that they are held.
